Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Gracie is one of our front desk volunteers. She is most gracious at helping with the day-to-day operations of Discover Hope. When I sat down with Gracie, she filled me in on her background first. She is married and lives in Newton. She fills her time with volunteering, enjoying her grandchildren and taking care of her two mules. She also has two step-daughters that I used to babysit when I was younger. You know that expression, “It’s a small world”? It truly is a wonderful, small world and God brings beautiful people into our lives for a reason.
Every Monday morning, you will find Gracie at the front desk welcoming guests and helping with whatever is asked of her. Although, she will tell you she likes to help in the kitchen the most. She is more of the “prep” helper or the clean-up crew. Her type of work is going behind the scenes and nurturing others by feeding their needs. She is a blessing to be able to help in all areas.
What I didn’t know about Gracie is she is now five and a half years sober from alcohol. She used alcohol as a crutch and discovered that she didn’t want to live that way anymore. Her strength came from attending Alcoholics Anonymous. And, she picked up a sponsor along the way who has been amazing through all the ups and downs. Through loving the Lord and church, Gracie was able to connect with Jen and the calling came quickly to help at Discover Hope.
By volunteering, she has found a closer walk with God. No longer feeling inhibited but awake. And the best feeling is satisfaction of knowing you have helped somebody. She looks forward to coming into Discover Hope as she finds the work is rewarding. “Everybody at Discover Hope is more relatable and friendly. “Nobody is hiding behind anything,” she told me. It makes her happy to serve the Lord in a comforting place.
Gracie encourages others to volunteer as it takes your mind off of yourself and on to serving the Lord. “That’s the name of the game,” she said. I have to agree with her. I love serving the Lord to further his Kingdom, not my own. We become new with Christ and must serve as he did.
